Students on program

East Carolina University and our team collaborated on an immersive graduate program for future educators. The program looked at the effects of government and economy on public and private school systems in Argentina. The group was introduced to Argentina through a traditional cooking class and a graffiti tour in some of the most historic neighborhoods in Buenos Aires. In Argentina’s capital city, the students met with the Dean of the business school at the Universidad de Palermo to learn how the university operates, their strategic programming, admissions, and policies.

“It was amazing to see how educators and educational leaders are passionate about their students' success and how this shows up in the educational programming offered to students.”

Marjorie Ringler, Professor and Chair in the Department of Educational Leadership

Their meeting with the U.S. Embassy gave them an inside look into the higher education system from an international strategy lens. A U.S. Cultural Affairs Officer spoke to the group about their initiatives in online learning, internationalization of Argentine universities, English language programs, and more.

The group also visited an educational non-profit, Fundacion Nordelta. The foundation provides support programs for those in vulnerable situations who may not have access to education, childcare, after school programs, or future education or career support.

“It was amazing to see how educator and educational leaders are passionate about their student’s success and how this shows up in the educational programming offered to students,” said Marjorie Ringler, Professor and Chair in the Department of Educational Leadership. “We immersed ourselves in a planning project with the school leaders and then had the opportunity to talk to students about their learning and also share about ourselves and what it is like in the USA.”

East Carolina in Ushuaia, Argentina

The programming in Buenos Aires was paired with a trip to Patagonia. They stayed in Ushuaia, a rural city on the very edge of the country and the continent where the group visited two private colegios (high schools) to better understand the education system in more rural parts on the country. “We were able to compare urban educational settings in Buenos Aires to rural settings in Ushuaia. Students learned how impactful government can be in affecting education, mainly through finance and budgeting,” said Marjorie.

Walking among penguins and riding the southernmost railway to the “end of the world” through Tierra del Fuego National Park was a highlight for the students, several of whom had never left the United States. When asked how these experiences impacted students, Margorie said, “students shared that this experience taught them to be broader in their leadership and to envision their leadership roles to expose students to a global society in addition to their local contexts. All students said they would travel abroad again and more importantly, to a south American country. They mentioned that they never considered South America as a destination until now.”
